Advances in the species sampling

Sasha Gnedin
(UU)

4 February 2009

The talk will overview the general framework of the species sampling problem, and models for random discrete distributions. Then we shall discuss the role of size-biasing and independence, along with a recent solution to a long-standing problem of characterising the two-parameter Pitman-Yor family of models by the property of independence of a single size-biased pick (the latter due to Haulk and Pitman, simplified by Gnedin).
