First-order phase transitions in the presence of continuous symmetries

Abstract: I discuss the occurrence of first-order phase transitions (coexistene of multiple Gibbs measures) for lattice spin models, in the presence of continuous symmetries. Such transitions can, but need not, be accompanied by the breaking of such symmetries. Proofs typically use the method of reflection positivity.
