The moduli space of curves and its tautological ring

Carel Faber (UU)

Abstract: The moduli space Mg parameterizes nonsingular curves (Riemann surfaces) of genus g. Its tautological ring is generated by a set of natural classes and contains the classes of many geometrically defined subvarieties. More than twenty years ago, I conjectured a precise description of the relations between the tautological classes. The past few years, many new results have been obtained regarding the tautological ring and several natural generalizations of it. After introducing the moduli space and the tautological classes, I intend to survey these results.
