Extreme value statistics for deterministic systems

Alef Sterk (RUG)

Abstract: Classical extreme value theory (EVT) is concerned with the probability distribution of large values in stochastic processes. In the last decade the applicability of EVT has been extended to the setting of deterministic dynamical systems; then the idea is study the statistics of a time series obtained by evaluating a scalar observable along evolutions of the system. In this talk I will briefly discuss the classical results, some recently obtained results, and promising directions for future research.
