Abstract: We present a model in which the formation of a herd of prey is the result of the interaction between a predator and the heterogeneous prey individuals. We generalize the model to allow for both the formation of the herd and the choice of its escape route by its leader. We show how these are determined by the interior tensions between the different individuals of the herd, the strong and the weak, and the outside pressure by the predator. (this is joint work with I.
