Kurt Hensel and the creation of p-adic numbers

Abstract. My PhD-project is about the formation of the concept of "p-adic numbers", and especially about the significance of the early works of Kurt Hensel for this development. Kurt Hensel was the most important pupil of Leopold Kronecker and deeply influenced by his ideas about arithmetic. It seems that Hensel's central ideas were first articulated in an article of which it is very difficult to make sense, both in its time and from a modern point of view. I will talk about attempts to deal with this phenomen
