"Epistle of the Number" an Episode of Algebra in Hebrew (Sicily, 14th Century)

Abstract. In my talk I shall present my research on the manuscript of "epistle of the number" (iggeret ha-mispar), written in Hebrew at the end of the 14th century in Sicily by the Jewish astronomer and poet Isaac ben Shlomo ben al-Ahdab. The epistle derives from a 13th century Arab source and contains first testimony for abstract algebra in Hebrew. My work lies on the interface of medieval history, Judaism, Arabic mathematics as well as Hebrew and Arabic philology.
