Descartes and the Problema astronomicum

Abstract.The aim of this talk is to study the solution of a problem on the shades of three unequal sticks presented by F. van Schooten in the latin editions of
Descartes' Géométrie published in 1649 and 1661.
This problem, which has appeared initially in the Stampioen-Waessenaer controversy of 1639 under the name of Problema astronomicum, held the attention of
Descartes which took part in the argument against Stampioen.
The Problema astronomicum seems to us to shed light on the relations between the cartesian method, geometry and algebra.
