Project 2007: Epidemiology
This project will be about mathematical models to describe the spread of
infectious diseases in a population. We will start by introducing the so-called
SIR-model (susceptibles, infectives, removed) and introduce quantities like the
basic reproduction number and the final size of an outbreak. The aim of this
course is to work as a group to answer biological problems about epidemiology by
using mathematical models.
There are no books that are required for this project. However, there are several books that may be of use.
- Mathematical Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases. Model Building, Analysis and Interpretation. O.Diekmann, J.A.P.Heesterbeek.
- Infectious Diseases of Humans: Dynamics and Control
Roy Malcolm C. Anderson, Robert McCredie May.
- Stochastic Epidemic Models and Their Statistical Analysis. Hakan Andersson, Tom Britton.
- Virus Dynamics. Mathematical Prinicples of Immunology and Virology. Martin
A. Nowak and Robert M. May.
- Epidemic Modelling. An Introduction. D.J. Daley and J. Gani
Furthermore, there is a huge amount of online available articles about modeling of
infectious diseases.
